On 3 September, I joined the campaign for #HUGHSLAW at Parliament standing with families whose children face critical illness and cancer.
Led by Hugh’s parents, Ceri and Frances, Hugh’s Law calls for immediate paid leave and job protection for parents from the moment of diagnosis, because no family should have to choose between caring for their child and financial survival.
Both Hugh and Sophie died of rhabdomyosarcoma on the same day - Saturday 18th September 2021.
When Sophie became unwell in September 2020, I was offered just 16 weeks unpaid leave. I needed more, lost my job, and didn’t qualify for benefits. Families like ours face an average of £750 extra monthly costs - an impossible strain during the worst moments of our lives.
On the day, we were joined by MPs, charities, and grieving families including Abby’s Heroes, George’s Rockstars and Alfie’s Wish - all united in memory and in purpose.
